WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University Department of Athletics is expanding its storied tradition as the Home of the Huddle by adding a new kind of teamwork — on horseback — with the introduction of women's equestrian as a varsity sport beginning in the 2026-27 academic year.
With this addition, the Bison will quite literally grow the Herd.
Gallaudet will join the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), competing in both English (Jumping Seat) and Western disciplines against institutions from across the country.
"As the Home of the Huddle, we've always believed in communication, trust, and unity," said Gallaudet Athletic Director Warren Keller. "Equestrian takes those same values and puts them into motion in a powerful way between rider and horse. It's a natural extension of our identity—and our Herd."
The new program will feature head-to-head competition, where riders will compete on horses provided by the host institution, emphasizing adaptability, connection, and composure—traits long associated with Gallaudet student-athletes.
Early plans include exploring training facilities throughout the greater Washington, D.C., area, with administrators noting the possibility of developing a future on-campus "Bison Stable Complex" to house the program.
A national search for the program's inaugural head coach will begin immediately, with recruiting efforts expected to focus on student-athletes who embody Gallaudet's mission of access, innovation, and inclusive excellence.
Additional details, including competition schedules, facility partnerships, and branding for the newest members of the Herd, will be announced in the coming months.
Because at Gallaudet, whether in a huddle or in the saddle…we move together.
April Fool's! :)
