ASTON, Pa. – Gallaudet University traveled to Pennsylvania on Friday and threw a block party in The Mirenda Center against Neumann University in a United East men's volleyball contest.
Gallaudet swept the host Knights in straight sets, 3-0, by the scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-21.
Gallaudet (6-14, 3-2 United East) surpasses the win totals from last season when the Bison won five games and two conference matches.
The Bison tied a program record for blocks in a match as the buff and blue made 13 against Neumann on Friday evening. In fact, GU set the original mark of 13 blocks last season, ironically in the same gym, against the Knights but that was a five-set match.
Neumann (3-10, 1-3 United East) couldn't get past the Bison middle hitters of
John McCabe (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Tyler Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) along with an additional trio of setter
Troy Holcomb (Fremont, Calif.), opposite
Austin Baker (Frederick, Md.) and outside hitter
Kodi Lee (Lehi, Utah).
McCabe tied the program record for blocks in a match with seven, which is a new career high, while Baker made a career best six blocks. Wascher and Holcomb made five each and Lee chipped in three. Holcomb's five blocks is a career high for the sophomore setter who passed out 34 assists in the win.
Sophomore outside hitter
Zachary Bippus (Fishers, Ind.) led all hitters with 15 kills on 37 swings and nine errors and served up three aces. GU finished the game with eight service aces.
The Knights were led by Isaiah Thomas' 10 kills and five digs while Noah Banaag passed out 20 assists and John Soeffing made four blocks (one solo) in the loss.
