WASHINGTON – On an overcast, cool and breezy Wednesday in the nation's capital the Gallaudet University softball team dropped a United East conference doubleheader to Rosemont College by the scores of 12-1 in five innings and 16-6.
Gallaudet (3-19, 0-4 United East) has now lost seven straight, and its home record falls to 2-11. Rosemont (5-17, 4-0 United East) continues to soar up the conference standings with an unblemished record.
Game 1: Rosemont 12, Gallaudet 1 (F/5)
In the first game of the day, the Bison were in a close game with the Ravens as Rosemont scored an early run in the first inning. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors until the fourth inning when Rosemont scored nine times.
Down by 10 runs, Gallaudet finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) walked, stole second base and advanced to the third and eventually home plate on passed balls. The Bison trailed 10-1 as the teams went into the fifth and final inning.
Drolsbaugh (2-8) took the loss in the circle as she surrendered 12 runs (three earned) on 10 hits, walked two and struck out five in five innings of work.
Rosemont pitcher Josie Krieman (3-8) picked up the complete-game victory as she allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out 11 Bison.
Game 2: Rosemont 16, Gallaudet 6
In the second game, Rosemont picked up where it left off and scored three runs in the top of the first inning. GU swung back and answered the bell with two runs in the first and four runs in the second inning.
Sophomore
Hannah Puent (Indianapolis, Ind.) came through with a two-run single in the first inning to bring home sophomore
Olivia Taufu'i (Blackfoot, Idaho) and Drolsbaugh.
GU's four-run second inning was headlined by RBI singles from Drolsbaugh and Puent and a two-run double by senior
Caitlyn Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.).
The Bison held the 6-3 lead until the fourth inning when Gallaudet's defense allowed the Ravens back into the game. GU made two errors in the field and several passed balls aided Rosemont in scoring six times to take a 9-6 lead.
The Ravens tacked on one run in the fifth and sixth to lead the Bison by five runs, 11-6. It wasn't until the seventh when Rosemont put the game out of reach when five additional runs came home to increase the margin to 10 runs.
First-year starting pitcher
Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.) took the loss in the circle as she threw 3.1 innings before Drolsbaugh came in to pitch 2.2 innings. First year
