Slow start dooms Bison against Battling Bishops

RALEIGH, N.C. – It was a quick trip south for the Gallaudet University softball team as the Bison played two games here Sunday at the 18th annual Triangle Collegiate Softball Tournament at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

In the second game of the day, the Bison went up against North Carolina Wesleyan University and lost, 15-3, in five innings.

The Battling Bishops scored five runs in the first inning, three in the second and seven runs in the third to take a 15-0 lead over the Bison.

Gallaudet (2-8) got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the third and two runs in the fifth.

North Carolina Wesleyan (6-7) starting pitcher Morgan Aycock (1-3) threw the first three innings to get the win.

Gallaudet starting pitcher Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.) took the loss after a rough first inning where she surrendered five runs on no hits and four walks. Fellow first-year pitcher Olivia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) threw the rest of the game and allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits, 10 walks and five strikeouts.

Bond contributed at the plate with an RBI single in the third inning to score first year Kendra Cogswell (Riverside, Calif.). The Bison had the bases loaded with only one out but the next two batters got out to end the threat.

Bond later reached base by an error while junior Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) scored in the fifth. Junior outfielder Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) scored on an RBI single by Caitlyn Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) to complete GU's scoring.
