WASHINGTON – It was a rough start to Thursday afternoon's non-conference game for Gallaudet University softball as the Bison surrendered seven runs to visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
The Engineers used two big innings that were aided by five home runs to pull away from the Bison en route to a 15-3 win in five innings at the GU Softball Complex.
WPI (3-0) wasted little time as the Engineers scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. Gallaudet starting pitcher
Olivia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) walked the first batter and gave up a two-run home run to Sandy Fairbairn to left field. Wascher walked the next two batters before Destiny Lum slammed a three-run shot to left-center field. In a blink of an eye, it was 5-0 WPI. That ended the day for Wascher in the circle as junior
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) came in from center field to take over pitching duties.
Drolsbaugh helped her cause in the bottom half of the first with a triple to right field and scored moments later on a fielder's choice by sophomore
Olivia Taufu'i (Blackfoot, Idaho). Gallaudet (2-9) loaded the bases with only one out but couldn't push across another run.
Junior
Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) doubled down the right field line in the bottom of the second inning with two outs. Drolsbaugh and Taufu'i singled as Cherena came around to score and cut the WPI lead down to five, 7-2.
The Engineers added two runs in the top of the third and exploded for six in the fourth.
Fairbairn had an inside-the-park home run to lead off the fourth. Emma Nagy went yard with a shot to left field to plate two runs. Grace Grant followed with her own two-run home run as the Engineers led 14-2. WPI has now hit 10 home runs in three games in two days.
GU scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth after sophomore
Andi Sisemore (, Texas) singled up the middle and worked around the bases before scoring on a passed ball.
Wascher (1-1) took the loss in the circle for the Bison. Drolsbaugh logged five innings and struck out two batters. WPI starting pitcher Kaitlyn Barr (1-0) picked up the complete game win as she allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out eight Bison.
