WASHINGTON – Sweet Briar College pitcher Ambyre Taylor threw a perfect game against Gallaudet University here Saturday to begin the Bison season at the GU Softball Complex. The visiting Vixens won the first game, 10-0, and the second game, 21-5, both in five innings.
Gallaudet (0-2) struck out nine times as Taylor faced 15 batters.
Sweet Briar (5-3) collected 10 runs off seven hits and one walk against Bison starting pitcher
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.). The Bison defense did not help the junior right-hander as they made 10 errors in the field as all 10 runs were unearned.
SBC outfielder Jordan Martin led the way 2 for 3 at the plate with three runs scored and one walk.
Game 2: Sweet Briar 21, Gallaudet 5
In the second game, Drolsbaugh hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the first inning as her hit to right-center field went to the fence as she raced around the bases. The home run cut the Vixens lead to two, 3-1, after one inning.
GU added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth after the Bison trailed 19-1.
Sophomore
Olivia Taufu'i (Blackfoot, Idaho) doubled home junior
Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) to begin the scoring in the fourth. First-year infielder
Shaelyn Johnson (Redlands, Calif.) drove home Taufu'i with a single up the middle.
In the fifth, Drolsbaugh tripled to right-center field to bring home pinch-runner
Kendra Cogswell (Riverside, Calif.). Drolsbaugh later scored before the Bison hit into a double play to end the game.
First-year pitcher
Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.) took the loss in the circle after 2.1 innings before giving way to Drolsbaugh. The two Bison pitchers only allowed 12 earned runs as the GU defense made eight errors in the field.
