Blessed Mbogo joins the 1,000 point club as Gallaudet wraps up the men’s basketball season

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Senior forward Blessed Mbogo (Silver Spring, Md) joined the 1,000-point club on Saturday afternoon as Gallaudet University dropped its final game of the season to Bryn Athyn, 83-72, in a United East conference game in the Asplundh Field House.

Mbogo reached 1,000 career points as a Bison in the first half when he made a putback basket  with 2:10 on the clock. He finished the game with a game-high 23 points, five rebounds, two steals and made four 3-pointers. Mbogo completed his four-year career with 1,015 points, 435 rebounds and 113 3-pointers in 79 games played (53 starts).

Mbogo is one of 29 players in Gallaudet men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.

Gallaudet (3-21, 3-13 United East) and Bryn Athyn (17-8, 15-1United East) played competitive basketball in first eight minutes, as Lions were led 16-15 before they went on 8-0 run at the 5:48 mark then finished first half strong with a score of 34-26.

Bryn Athyn, the top-ranked team in the United East, continued to dominate in the first 11 minutes of the second half as the Lions led 61-40, GU was able to cool the Lions down and cut the 21 points into 11 points to finish the game. The Lions outscored the Bison, 49-46 in the final 20 minutes of play.

First-year guard Alex Ortman (Norway, Mich.) added 16 points, grabbed three rebounds, swiped two steals and two blocks. First-year guard Brandon Washington (Citronelle, Ala.) scored 11 points off the bench along with four rebounds and passed for two assists.

Senior guard Malosi Viena (Waipahu, Hawaii) finished his career with four points and grabbed three rebounds. Viena concludes his four-year career with 409 points, 172 rebounds, 46 3-pointers, 130 assists and 106 steals in 72 games played (34 starts). 

Senior center Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) finished his career with six rebounds and two blocks. Chung finished his four-year career with 770 points, 518 rebounds in 91 games played (84 starts).
 
The Lions had six players in double figures led by Jalen Cary who finished with 19 points.
