WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Gallaudet University women's swimming team swam a competitive meet against King's (Pa.) College on Friday night in the Scandlon Natatorium.
The Bison swam in nine of the 10 women's events and lost, 84-58, to the Monarchs.
Gallaudet (0-9) had eight swimmers participate as four Bison swam in multiple individual events.
First year
Youstina Alesha (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of two minutes and 41.79 seconds. Alesha was the first to touch the wall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 7:03.78, which was over a minute and 43 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Alesha earned 18 of Gallaudet's 58 points with two first-place finishes that garnered nine points each.
A trio of Bison swimmer finished second and third in two different individual events. Sophomore
Melany Salcedo Benavides (Woodbridge, Va.) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (19:20.69) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (10:08.81); first year
Adelle Patton (Puyallup, Wash.) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:19.24) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (30.95) and first year
Zami Thompson (Austin, Texas) was second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:17.97) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:44.06).
Sophomore
Eliza Peterson (Snellville, Ga.) added a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (2:05.25).
GU earned 15 team points from its two relay teams. The Bison swam unopposed in the 200-yard medley relay to take first in 2:52.43 and snag 11 points. The team consisted of Thompson, sophomore
Alecia Miller (Litchfield, Ill.), Patton and first year
Hope MacPeek (Russellville, Ark.). The Bison closed out the meet in the 200-yard freestyle relay and finished second to King's with a time of 2:35.60. That GU relay team consisted of Thompson, sophomore
Ashley Corcoran (Broussard, La.), MacPeek and Salcedo Benavides.
King's (2-10) was led by Stefany Malaga Nunez who won the 50-yard freestyle (29.74), 100-yard backstroke (1:16.53) and 200-yard IM (3:07.37). The Monarchs also received two first-place finishes from Aubrey Gowen in the 100-yard freestyle (1:11.48) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:35.25). The duo of Malaga Nunez and Gowen were on the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team (2:27.40).

This was the last swim meet for the fall semester for Gallaudet. The Bison are off until the new year and will dive back into the pool on Saturday, Jan. 17, at home for an 11 a.m. conference meet against Marywood University.
