Baird, Greene have career games against WildCats on the road

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A strong start by the Gallaudet University women's basketball team here Monday afternoon at Randolph College gave a confidence boost to the Bison in this non-conference game in the Frances and Don Giles Gymnasium.

GU was within striking distance of the WildCats at the half only down 39-32 but a tough third quarter allowed the host to add 14 points to their seven-point lead. Randolph (5-4) outscored Gallaudet 45-26 in the second half and won the contest, 84-58.

The Bison put together their best first quarter of the season as the buff and blue shot 50 percent from the field (9-for-18) and drained four 3-pointers and held a six-point lead late in the opening quarter. Randolph scored the final six points of the first quarter as the teams were knotted at 23 apiece.

Gallaudet (1-8) cooled off in the second and third quarters and only made one 3-pointer in each of the final three quarters. The seven 3-pointers made is a season-high for the Bison.

First-year forward/center Natalie Greene (Fresno, Texas) continues to be a force for GU in each and every game as she set new career-high marks. Greene finished the game with a career best 25 points to go with eight rebounds. Greene went 9-for-14 from the free-throw line, which is a new high mark in a GU uniform for the first-year player.

Junior guard Seanna Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) played all but one minute of the game and set career marks in the process. Baird scored 14 points, made four 3-pointers, passed out seven assists and made three steals as those marks were all new personal bests.

First-year forward/center Kayla Debrow (Jacksonville, Fla.) grabbed a career best 11 rebounds (nine defensive boards) to go with four points.

The fourth and final Bison in double digits was sophomore guard/forward Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) with 10 points, eight rebounds, two 3-pointers and two assists.

Randolph, who is led by veteran and experienced head coach Polly Thomason, had two players in double figures. Sophia Stevens led the WildCats with 16 points, six assists and three steals. Talia Edmond added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. The host team scored 29 points off 29 turnovers by the Bison.
