BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Gallaudet University's win streak came to an end here Saturday evening as the Bison women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Bridgewater (Va.) College in Nininger Hall.
Gallaudet (24-6) battled back in the first set against the Eagles to win, 25-22. Bridgewater (19-7) took over the rest of the way with three straight set wins,14-25, 18-25, 14-25. The loss snapped Gallaudet's 18-match win streak.
Junior outside hitter
Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) posted a match-high 20 kills to go with 11 digs for a double-double. Worley added three aces and two blocks. Senior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 32 assists and made seven digs. Junior opposite
Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) was second on the team with eight kills and eight digs. Senior libero
Nicole Hicks (Corona, Calif.) made 15 digs while fellow senior
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) tallied six kills and 13 digs. Senior
Candace Broadnax (Springfield, Va.) finished her career with two kills and two digs.
Bridgewater was paced by Reagan Stoop's 19 kills and 10 digs in the win.
"This will be a memorable season for different reasons as we were faced with several challenges. I am thrilled in the way this team responded and what they accomplished together," said Gallaudet coach
Lynn Ray Boren, '96. "While our postseason got cut short due to the Deaflympics, we made sure we did all we could do during the conference regular season and we went undefeated and won the regular-season title."
SENIOR CLASS
The match marked the finale for Gallaudet's four seniors; Broadnax, Gamble, Hicks and Lummer.
Broadnax had a career best season with 85 kills and 58 blocks in 26 matches. In three seasons, Broadnax compiled 172 kills and 102 blocks in 67 matches (179 sets).
Gamble, the NCAA Division III leader for service aces, finished the season with 109 aces (0.93 ace per set average) and passed out 1,103 assists. In three seasons, Gamble tallied 3,570 assists, 683 digs, 322 service aces, 196 kills, 115 blocks in 100 matches (348 sets).
Hicks and Lummer played the past four seasons for the Bison.
Hicks made a career-high 424 digs in a season and finished her career with 1,200 digs and 151 service aces in 128 matches (415 sets).
Lummer set career highs in a season for digs (379) and assists (51). In four seasons, Lummer recorded 1,222 digs, 1,177 kills, 181 service aces, 116 assists and 92 blocks in 130 matches (450 sets).
"We will miss this senior class and all they have contributed to the GU women's volleyball program. This senior class has a lot to be proud of during their time in a Bison uniform and we thank them for that," said Boren.
