Bison win first meeting with Cairn, 74-59

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team extended its win streak to four games here Saturday afternoon with a 74-59 victory over Cairn University in a United East conference game. This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Gallaudet (7-8, 4-2 United East) scored the game's first six points and built a 16-2 lead midway through the first quarter. The Bison took a 26-9 lead into the second quarter and led 39-23 at the half. In the second half, the Highlanders played closer to the Bison and even outscored the visitors in the fourth quarter, 20-14, to cut down the GU margin.

Sophomore guard Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) continues to pace the Bison offense as she netted a season-high 24 points to go with six steals, five rebounds, two assists and one block. Senior guard Raj Guettler (Frederick, Md.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow senior guard Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Middletown, Md.) was the third Bison in double digits with 10 points, three assists and three steals.

GU was able to empty the bench as nine players logged meaningful minutes for the Bison. Gallaudet had 10 of its 14 players record two or more points.

Cairn (1-12, 0-7 United East) was led offensively by Kailee Sobrino and Emily Brittin who finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Brittin and Dezaray Bright (13 points) tallied nine rebounds each as the Highlanders lost their 12th straight game.

  • First-year forward Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) chipped in eight points and four boards
  • Senior guard Sunita Schmidjorg (Austin, Texas) played in her first game since the first week of December and led all Bison reserves with five points

  • The Bison scored 25 points off 25 turnovers committed by Cairn
  • GU shot 50.8 percent from the field (31 for 61)

GU will return home and face Penn St.-Abington (10-3, 6-0 United East) on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 5 p.m. on Padden Court in the Field House.
