WASHINGTON – The 2024 season got underway for the Gallaudet University softball team on a cold and windy Friday evening at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison played host to Wilson College.
Gallaudet (0-2) dropped the non-conference doubleheader 13-0 in five innings and 8-4 in the second game against the Phoenix (2-0).
The Bison mustered only two singles against Wilson starting pitcher Paige Dill (1-0) in the first game. GU committed five errors as the Phoenix took advantage and scored six runs in the third inning to break open a 2-0 game. The Phoenix tacked on five more in the top of the fifth as the game ended after that frame due to the mercy rule.
Sophomore pitcher
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) took the loss in the circle for the buff and blue.
In the second game, Gallaudet built an early 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Wilson knotted the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the third and built a cushion with five runs in the top of the fifth inning as the Bison committed two of their four errors in that frame under the lights.
GU got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when first-year catcher
Andi Sisemore (Arlington, Texas) grounded out to the shortstop to bring home Drolsbaugh (two runs scored) from third.
Junior shortstop
Caitlyn Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the Bison with two hits.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) took the loss in the circle for the Bison.
