GU locks up first round bye with road win over Penn St.-Berks

READING, Pa. – Next weekend just opened up for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team after the Bison defeated Penn St.-Berks, 83-56, here Saturday in a United East game.

Gallaudet (16-8, 9-2 United East) assured itself of the No. 2 seed in the upcoming United East-Volt Division tournament and subsequently one of the two byes. The Bison will not have to play in the first round next Saturday and can prepare for the semifinal round on Monday, Feb. 19, in the Field House.

The Bison were chasing Penn St.-Harrisburg (13-11, 10-1 United East), who defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland (13-10, 6-5 United East), 74-49, on Saturday afternoon to lock up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament since the Nittany Lions swept the Bison. Harrisburg will travel to Lancaster Bible College (8-15, 6-5 United East) on Tuesday night.

GU led from start-to-finish as the Bison led 29-15 after the first 10 minutes of play and took a 47-35 lead into intermission. The Bison outscored the Nittany Lions, 23-6, in the third quarter before Penn St.-Berks (1-21, 0-12 United East) put up a team best 18 in the fourth to GU's 13.

Four Bison finished the game in double figures led by first year Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) with 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. The assist and steal totals were game highs. Senior forward Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) tallied a double-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds. Senior guard Rajena Guettler (Frederick, Md.) finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals. Junior guard Claire Ruiz-Tucker (Frederick, Md.) posted up 12 points, six assists, five boards and four steals.

The Nittany Lions were led by Hailey Miller's 20-point game while Mahala Ruffner recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Penn St.-Berks is the first team from the Volt Division to be done with its regular-season conference schedule.

Gallaudet returns home to close out the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 13, against Penn College (6-18, 2-9 United East) at 7 p.m. in the Field House. GU defeated Penn College, 71-57, last month (Jan. 20) in Bardo Gymnasium. GU Athletics will recognize three different occasions on Tuesday including; Black History Night, Faculty Appreciation Night and Senior Night.
