Draw slips away from Bison against Penn St.-Brandywine

WASHINGTON - The spark Gallaudet University needed here Wednesday night was quickly extinguished by Penn St.-Brandywine as an own goal aided the Lions to a 3-1 win in a United East Conference men's soccer game under the lights at Hotchkiss Field.

Gallaudet (2-11, 1-4 United East) and Penn St.-Brandywine (4-7-3, 1-4 United East) were held scoreless in the first half as both defenses played stout against each other.

The Lions were the first to get on the scoreboard with a Kyle Reuter goal with a shot from 20 yards out past GU goalie Luke McBrine (Weymouth, Mass.) in the 59th minute.

GU got its equalizer in the 72nd minute when senior midfielder Mamboh Smith (Silver Spring, Md.) fed first-year forward Stokely Karp (Framingham, Mass.) for a goal. Karp lobbed a shot from 20 yards out over the head of Penn St.-Brandywine goalie Elijah DeBooth (one save) and into the net. Karp celebrated his third goal of the season with his teammates as the Bison were back in the game.

The momentum didn't last long as the Bison defense failed to clear a ball out of the goalie box and an unfortunate pass went into the Gallaudet goal for an own goal for the Lions at the 73:30 mark.

GU couldn't regroup as the chance for a draw went up in smoke.

Penn St.-Brandywine added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Francis Sarpong blasted a shot into the right upper-90 to put the game away.

McBrine finished the game with nine saves as the Lions held a 29-5 edge in shots and took eight corner kicks.
