Gallaudet finishes second at Worthington Classic as two Bison make all-tournament team

WASHINGTON - It was the right start Gallaudet University women's volleyball head coach Lynn Ray Boren wanted on Saturday afternoon but an early lead slipped away from the Bison in the championship match of the 16th annual Worthington Classic. GU lost to Marymount (Va.) University in four sets; 22-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21.

Gallaudet (15-3) finished second overall out of the eight schools in the two-day tournament named after legendary Bison head coach Peg Worthington, who is enshrined in the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Coach Worthington was present for the first GU match each day during the tournament.

The Bison had two players land on the all-tournament team in junior setter Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) and sophomore outside hitter Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.).

GU started the day with a 3-1 victory over DeSales University; 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19, to win Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record. Lummer had 17 kills and Gamble passed out 42 assists in the four-set win over the Bulldogs. Senior Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) made a match-high 30 digs while senior Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) added 12 kills and four aces.

In the Marymount match, GU's leaders posted near identical numbers as Lummer recorded 17 kills, again, and Gamble made 43 assists and five service aces. The Bison made 10 blocks led by first-year middle hitter Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.), who had five block assists. Junior Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) added 16 kills and three blocks.
