WASHINGTON - It was the right start Gallaudet University women's volleyball head coach
Lynn Ray Boren wanted on Saturday afternoon but an early lead slipped away from the Bison in the championship match of the 16th annual Worthington Classic. GU lost to Marymount (Va.) University in four sets; 22-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21.
Gallaudet (15-3) finished second overall out of the eight schools in the two-day tournament named after legendary Bison head coach
Peg Worthington, who is enshrined in the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Coach Worthington was present for the first GU match each day during the tournament.
The Bison had two players land on the all-tournament team in junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) and sophomore outside hitter
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.).
GU started the day with a 3-1 victory over DeSales University; 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19, to win Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record. Lummer had 17 kills and Gamble passed out 42 assists in the four-set win over the Bulldogs. Senior
Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) made a match-high 30 digs while senior
Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) added 12 kills and four aces.
In the Marymount match, GU's leaders posted near identical numbers as Lummer recorded 17 kills, again, and Gamble made 43 assists and five service aces. The Bison made 10 blocks led by first-year middle hitter
Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.), who had five block assists. Junior
Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) added 16 kills and three blocks.

GU will make the short trip north to Towson, Md., on Wednesday, Sept. 27, to play Goucher College at 7 p.m.
