Meet 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame Class: Michael Weinstock, '81 & G-'94

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department is proud to announce its 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame Class. Over the course of one week the department will introduce one member of the seven-person class each day.

The seven-person class will be released in alphabetical order. Each release will include a brief summary of the inductees' career at GU along with a video of Athletic Director Warren Keller contacting each inductee or member of their family to share the news of being selected to the Athletics Hall of Fame.

At the conclusion of the week, a general overall release about the entire Athletics Hall of Fame class will be shared along with ticket information for the event.

Our seventh and final inductee of the 2023 Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame Class is Michael Weinstock, '81 & G-'94.

Weinstock was the architect that transformed the Gallaudet Athletics Department into what it is today after serving as its Athletic Director (AD) for 11 years (2007-18). Gallaudet's athletic department went from five full-time staff members when Weinstock started as AD to 19, and introduced the use of graduate assistants to help bolster team-coaching staffs and give experience to many deaf and hard of hearing students.

Weinstock helped to overhaul Gallaudet's athletic brand (logo and colors) and its facilities with the installment of new turf fields on three fields, an updated track and field venue, new bleachers, locker rooms, team meeting spaces, conference room, athletic training offices and work space, expanded fitness complex, a new home for the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame and many other improvements that have made an impact with recruiting and retention.

Under Weinstock's leadership, Gallaudet athletics found a home for football in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) in 2009 and joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), a year later, in 2010 after being a founding member of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).

During its time in the NEAC, Gallaudet won 11 combined conference championships in women's volleyball (7), men's swimming (3) and women's swimming (1) to go along with several NEAC regular-season championships. Gallaudet's football team won the 2013 ECFC championship and became the first GU men's team in school history to reach the NCAA tournament. Bison athletic teams made nine NCAA tournament appearances while several individuals made NCAA tournament appearances in track and field.

Gallaudet garnered hundreds of all-conference and player of the week awards during Weinstock's tenure to go along with NEAC Player, Rookie and Coach of the Year honors. Plus, Gallaudet's College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors increased from two to 11 along with several other All-American honors for Bison student-athletes.

During Weinstock's time Gallaudet's athletic department reached unparalleled success with garnering national media attention thanks, in part, to its sports information office, which landed Bison student-athletes, coaches and administrators on national news and the front page of prominent newspapers and publications.

Prior to joining the Gallaudet athletics department, Weinstock spent 25 years working at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD).

The 2023 Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame event will take place during Homecoming Weekend on campus. The induction ceremony is set for Sunday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., in the Peikoff Alumni House ("Ole Jim").

The Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame Induction is one of the premier events of the year for the GU Athletics Department. The special event recognizes the individuals, past and present, whose contributions to Gallaudet University Athletics have been deemed worthy of induction into the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame.

To be considered for the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame one must be a former Bison student-athlete, coach and/or contributor that is five years removed from the University. One must be nominated in writing and submitted to the Gallaudet University Athletics Department during an open nomination period. Inductees can be deaf, hard of hearing or hearing. All nominations are then screened and reviewed by the Gallaudet Athletics Hall of Fame committee.
