ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The 2023 season for the Gallaudet University baseball team came to close here Saturday as the Bison played two United East Conference games against St. Mary's College of Maryland.
GU was shut out by the Seahawks 13-0 in both games as St. Mary's took the first game in seven innings and the second game was stopped after the fifth inning. GU only had nine players today and after a late injury in the second contest, play was halted and the game was called.Â
The Bison finish the campaign with a 7-31 record and a 1-20 mark in conference play. GU lost its final 17 games.
Senior Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) had GU's only hit in the first game as he singled to left-center field in the sixth inning.
Sliva-Wynne (2-7) threw a complete game and took the loss on the mound as he struck out four batters in seven innings worked against St. Mary's (11-17, 10-10 United East)
In the second game, Gallaudet tallied three hits as junior catcher Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) recorded two of the three hits with one double. Junior Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) had the other hit.
Sophomore Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.) took the loss on the mound as he pitched 4.2 innings before he gave way to freshman Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) who got the final out of the fifth with a fly out.
The game featured two women who are on two different NCAA Division III teams this season; Elsbury and St. Mary's sophomore pitcher Skylar Kaplan, who did not appear in the game. Elsbury started and played first base in both games before she took the mound in the fifth inning of the second game.Â
