First-place team tough task for Bison softball

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The Gallaudet University softball team got swept by the top team in the United East Conference here Saturday as the Bison fell 7-1 and 14-6 in five innings to Penn State Harrisburg.

Gallaudet (11-15, 5-7 United East) fell behind early in both games against Penn State Harrisburg (16-6, 8-0 United East) as the Bison only held a brief 1-0 lead in the second game over the Lions.

Penn State Harrisburg scored two runs in the first, third and sixth innings and added a run in the second of the first game. GU got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a ground out scored freshman Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) from third base, who tripled minutes prior.

Freshman pitcher Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) took the loss in the circle as she threw a complete game and struck out six batters.

In the second game, Elsbury singled home sophomore Elaine Swecker (San Diego, Calif.), who led things off with a triple.

The Elsbury-Swecker combo connected, again, in the third inning when Elsbury singled in Swecker from third base. Freshman Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) stole home to give GU its second run before Elsbury knocked in Swecker to cut the Lions lead to 8-3.

GU added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, thanks to an error by the Lions that allowed two Bison to scamper home.

UP NEXT
GU will play four more conference games on the road next weekend. The Bison will travel to Penn St.-Abington (11-7, 5-3 United East) on Friday, April 14, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
