WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Gallaudet University softball team played its first official road game of the 2023 season here Friday at Penn College. The Bison got swept by the Wildcats, 10-0 and 9-1 in six innings, of a United East Conference doubleheader.
Gallaudet (11-13, 5-5 United East) recorded one hit in the first game when freshman pitcher
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) singled up the middle to break up the no-hit bid by Penn College starting pitcher MacKenzie Weaver (7-3).
Penn College (13-5, 5-1 United East) scored one run in the first, four in the fifth and walked off the game in the sixth inning with five runs. Ivvy Morder blasted a three-run home run to end the game by the eight-run mercy rule.
Drolsbaugh (2-2) took the loss in the circle as she allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits, two walks and struck out three in 5.2 innings while the Bison defense made seven errors in the field. Weaver struck out seven Bison and walked two in six innings of work.
In the second game, Penn College scored five runs in the third and four in the sixth to run-rule the Bison once more.
Gallaudet got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth inning as a wild pitch allowed junior
Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) to come home. The Bison finished the game with three singles.
Freshman pitcher
Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) took the loss in the circle as she allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 16 hits, two walked and struck out four in 5.2 innings. The Bison defense made three errors in the field.
Kyla Benner (5-2) took the win as she threw six innings and surrendered one unearned run on three hits and struck out six.
GU has played 16 games at home and six at a neutral site in Florida for Spring Break but today's games were the first official road games for the Bison.
