WASHINGTON - The scoreboard at Hoy Field got a workout here Friday night under the lights at Hoy Field as Gallaudet University played host to Penn St.-Abington in a United East Conference baseball game.
Gallaudet (7-27, 1-15 United East) scored 14 runs in four innings but the Bison couldn't keep pace with Penn St.-Abington (15-16, 10-6 United East) as the Nittany Lions won, 42-14, in a three-hour and 51-minute game to begin the three-game series.
The Bison had four players record two hits in the game as the top of the lineup combined to score 13 of Gallaudet's 14 runs. Freshman shortstop Darico Castillo (Passaic, N.J.) led the way at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) finished 2-for-6 at the dish with three RBI and two runs scored. Gallaudet's first three batters; seniors Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.), sophomore Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.) and junior Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) scored three runs each.
The Bison scored six runs in the bottom of the third to cut into the Nittany Lion lead as GU only trailed 10-6 at the time.
Penn St.-Abington responded with a nine-run fourth to chase GU starting pitcher Eli Solomon (Flushing, N.Y.) as the visitors led 19-6.
GU outscored the Nittany Lions 8-2 over the next two and a half innings as the Bison were down by seven, 21-14. The 14 runs are one shy of Gallaudet's season-high mark of 15.
The visitors broke open the game with a 16-run seventh inning.
Penn St.-Abington added five insurance runs in the eighth. The Nittany Lions sent 84 batters to the plate as they finished with 28 hits, drew 23 walks and six batters got hit by the pitch. The 23 walks was one shy of the Division III record of 24 set on April 17, 2017, when Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) walked 24 times against Principia.
This was the most runs surrendered by GU since a 40-7 loss to Gwynedd Mercy back on February 22, 2020.
The two teams were five runs away from tying the NCAA Division III record for most combined runs in a game (61).
UP NEXT
It will be a quick turnaround as the Bison will host Penn St.-Abington in a conference doubleheader in a few hours on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. The game was moved up one hour due to the impending rain slated to hit the nation's capital in the afternoon.
