Gallaudet splits Tuesday's action in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Gallaudet University got off on the right foot on Tuesday with a 4-3 softball victory over Lasell University at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park. Later that day, GU dropped a 7-3 contest to Knox College at the same venue.

Gallaudet (4-5) held a 2-0 lead over Lasell as the teams headed into the sixth innings but the Lasers scored three times to take a 3-2 lead. The Bison responded with two runs in the bottom half led by an RBI single by Danyeal Davis (Newport News, Va.). Junior Lennette Butler (Columbus, Ohio) scored the eventual game-winning run moments later.

Freshman Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) went the distance and threw the complete game as she allowed three runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two in the win.

Abigail Fortin (0-2) took the loss in the circle for the Lasers (3-2) as she threw six innings and surrendered four runs (two earned) on seven hits, four walks and struck out five.

In the second game, Knox (1-5) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and tacked on two more runs in the second before Gallaudet got on the scoreboard in the third.

Sophomore Elaine Swecker (San Diego, Calif.) singled home freshman Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) from second base in the top of the third inning for GU's first run.

In the fourth, freshman Aileen Balcazar (Burbank, Ill.) came through with a two-run single to bring home junior Ariel Senics (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) to cut the Prairie Fire lead to three, 6-3.

Sophomore Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) made her debut in the circle to start the game but took the loss before Drolsbaugh came on to pitch the final five innings.
