NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Gallaudet University baseball team hit the road for the first time in 2023 on Tuesday for a nine-inning game against No. 18 Christopher Newport University. The Captains (10-1) got the best of the Bison with a 12-1 win at a sunny Captains Park.
Gallaudet (3-5) got on the scoreboard first when junior catcher
Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) singled off a 3-1 pitch from starting pitcher Jack Anderson (1-0). Diaz's single up the middle brought home senior outfielder
Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas), who singled and stole second base.
CNU scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning off GU starting pitcher
Eli Solomon (Flushing, N.Y.), who pitched five innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out one.
The Bison finished the game with seven hits as Diaz and freshman
Darico Castillo (Passaic, N.J.) collected two singles each.
The win was career win No. 600 for CNU head coach John Harvell. The Captains made their D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll debut on Tuesday after receiving votes during the preseason poll.

GU returns home to host two non-conference doubleheaders this weekend at Hoy Field. The Bison begin things against Geneva College on Saturday, March 4, at noon. This will be the first games for the Golden Tornadoes.
