BALTIMORE – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball season ended here Thursday on the campus of Johns Hopkins University as the Bison lost to 16th-ranked Wesleyan University, 3-0.
Gallaudet battled tough against the Cardinals, who controlled the net with nine blocks against the Bison. GU hung around in every set and kept the NESCAC champions on their toes as Wesleyan escaped with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 win.
Gallaudet (31-4) concludes its most successful season, wins (31) and win percentage (.885), under the direction of Head Coach
Lynn Ray Boren (18 seasons). The Bison made their 14th NCAA tournament appearance after it won the United East Conference championship last week.
GU senior outside hitter
Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) led the Bison with 15 kills and nine digs while junior opposite
Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) tallied 14 kills. Junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 32 assists and served up four aces to lead the buff and blue. Gamble completed the double-double with 10 digs. Senior libero
Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) made a team best 17 digs in the loss.
Wesleyan (23-1) was paced by Bella Ahern's 12-kill, seven digs and two block performance.
The Cardinals advance to Friday's second round where they will face Christopher Newport University (22-12) at 4:30 p.m. The Captains took down Ramapo (25-2) in four sets, 3-1, in the first match of the day.
