MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - A strong second half was not enough for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team here Saturday on the road against SUNY Morrisville as the Bison lost 66-49 in the Student Activities Center.
Gallaudet (2-10, 1-2 United East) hung around with SUNY Morrisville (7-5, 3-0 United East) in the first quarter as the Bison scored the game's first four points and later led 8-3 just six minutes into the game. In the second quarter SUNY Morrisville, the defending United East Conference champion, flexed its muscle as the Mustangs outscored the Bison, 21-5, to take a 39-15 lead into halftime.
The Bison regrouped at the half and outscored the Mustangs 14-12 and 20-15 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Junior forward Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) led the way with a double-double as she scored 12 points, 12 rebounds and added three blocks, two steals and one assist in 30 minutes of play. Perry was limited to 16 minutes in the first half as Perry got whistled for three fouls.
Freshman guard Olivia Brown (St. Augustine, Fla.) matched Perry with 12 points to go with five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Sophomore center Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied eight points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal. Junior guard Rajena Guettler (Frederick, Md.) and sophomore guard Jewel Rocha (Austin, Texas) added five points each. Guettler ripped down 10 boards and passed out four assists and made one steal in the loss.
SUNY Morrisville had three Mustangs finish in double figures led by Rachel Vieira, who finished with 22 points, eight steals, four rebounds and one block.
Morrisville has won the last two games against the Bison as the Mustangs defeated GU, 74-69 OT, in last year's United East Conference championship in the Field House. Gallaudet holds an 8-7 edge in the series since 2011.
