GU men's swimming edges Goucher, 87-86

TOWSON, Md. - The Gallaudet University men's swimming program won a second straight meet to wrap up the 2022-23 regular-season on a high note. A new addition to the team helped to push the Bison past Goucher College here Saturday as Gallaudet won, 87-86.

Gallaudet (3-8) took first in four of the 11 events as the team depth outmatched the Gophers, nine swimmers to five. 

The Bison clinched the win with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet. The team of senior Nick Hohrman (Fergus Falls, Minn.), freshman Sethan Rolofson (Gardner, Kan.), freshman Keegan Wheeler (Brewertown, N.Y.) and freshman Trent Mora (Austin, Texas) took first with a time of 1:55.75 to pick up 11 team points to give GU its second straight win and third this season.

Gallaudet took first in the 200-yard medley relay to begin the meet with a quick 11-0 lead. The team of freshman Thomas Burkhardt (Flushing, Mich.), sophomore Peter Tran (Westminster, Calif.), sophomore Bryant Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) and Abdullah Alghamdi (Dammam, Saudi Arabia) posted a time of 2:10.95.

The Bison swept first and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle as sophomore Jules Yance (Danville, Ky.) finished first with a time of 14:01.74 while Rolofson was second (14:11.92). 

Burkhardt won the 100-yard freestyle (58.01) and finished second in the 50-free (24.61). Mora finish second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.75) and third in the 50-free (27.08).

Hohrman finished second in the 200-yard IM (2:38.25) and 100-yard backstroke (1:13.36). Gonzalez placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:32.02) and 100-yard backstroke (1:13.52). Yance took second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:52.05. 

GU claimed several other key team points with third- and fourth-place finishes.

The Goucher pair of Ben Graff (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle) and Richie Bialik (100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle and 200 IM) won six of the seven events to lead the Gophers. Goucher did not enter a relay team in the first or last events.

GU is off until the Atlantic East Conference Championship that will be held Feb. 10-12 in St. Mary's City, Md., on the campus of St. Mary's College of Maryland.
