WASHINGTON - It was a festive and memorable Senior Day for the Gallaudet University men's swimming program as the Bison hosted a double-dual meet featuring two Atlantic East Conference opponents in the Field House pool.
Gallaudet (2-8, 2-3 Atlantic East) split the meet as it won 101-49 over Marywood University (2-8, 1-4 Atlantic East) but lost 105-66 to Cabrini University (3-6, 2-2 Atlantic East). The Cavaliers from Cabrini defeated the Pacers from Marywood, 100-28.Â
Those results were through 23 of the 28 events scheduled for the double-dual meet with the men's and women's teams from all three schools on Saturday. The women's 50-yard butterfly finished at 3 p.m. and that is when the power went out on campus. While emergency lights provided enough safe light to get fans and teams out of the pool it was not safe enough to continue the meet. The coaches and officials huddled after 30 minutes to make the final decision to cancel the remainder of the meet and accept the results as they stood.
The five events that didn't take place include the men's 50-yard butterfly, the men's and women's (M/W) 100-yard IM and the M/W 200-yard freestyle relay.Â
A first for the Gallaudet swim program the power outage will be a fond memory for this year's graduating seniors on the swim teams. Head coach Brian Bennett recognized the graduating seniors during the 15-minute break midway through the meet. On the men's team the three swimmers recognized were Nick Hohrman (Fergus Falls, Minn.), Keegan Wheeler (Brewerton, N.Y.) and Jules Yance (Danville, Ky.).Â
In the 11 events that took place here are the highlights for the Bison.
Freshman Trent Mora (Austin, Texas) finished second overall in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:02.20 and was third overall in the 50-yard freestyle (27.00) and 200-yard freestyle (2:34.94).
