Box Score CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw here Saturday against Wilson College in a non-conference game.
Gallaudet (1-0-1) trailed right off the bat as the host Phoenix scored in the opening minutes to take a 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the contest. The Bison settled down and found the back of the net in the ninth and 14th minutes to take their first lead of the game.
Senior defender AJ Markel (College Park, Md.) found sophomore forward Mamboh Smith (Silver Spring, Md.) for Gallaudet's first goal on the day. This was Smith's third goal in two games. Four minutes later, sophomore defender Alaa Al-Riyami (Muscat, Oman) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Bison a 2-1 lead.
The flurry of goals continued as Wilson knotted the game at 2-2 when Aidan Diem scored an unassisted goal past Gallaudet goalkeeper Vershon Carter (Chicago, Ill.) at the 15:43 mark.
GU senior midfielder Kelly Grant (Hazelwood, Mo.) matched Smith with his third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Troy Holcomb (Fremont, Calif.) as the Bison led 3-2 just 17:25 into the game.
Gallaudet took the 3-2 lead into halftime and the game remained at that margin until the 68th minute when Wilson freshman midfielder Martin Souza scored an unassisted goal past junior goalkeeper Bernard Thompson (San Antonio, Texas), who entered in the 62nd minute, to tie the game.
The Bison recorded four shots the rest of the way but couldn't get any of them past Wilson goalie Billy Merk (three saves), who entered in the second half.
New this season the NCAA approved changes to soccer overtime rules. For the regular season, overtime has been eliminated, meaning if a game is tied after the regulation 90 minutes, it will end in a tie. Previously, teams played two 10-minute overtime periods in a sudden-victory (golden goal) format, and if neither team scored, the game ended in a tie. In conference tournaments and NCAA postseason games, the sudden-victory component has been eliminated, and teams will play two 10-minute overtime periods instead. If the game remains tied, a penalty-kick shootout will be held to determine the winner.
