Box Score 2 WASHINGTON - On a cold Saturday afternoon, the Gallaudet University softball team played a United East Conference doubleheader against Penn College of Technology. The Wildcats (8-5, 4-0 United East) picked up two victories, 12-0 and 20-2, in five innings against the Bison (0-12, 0-4 United East)
Game 1: Penn College 12, Gallaudet 0 (F/5)
Penn College scored runs in every inning but the third against Gallaudet. In the first inning, the Bison played great defense and held the Wildcats to only two runs.
GU's one hit came in the bottom first inning from sophomore Kate Lorenzo (Omaha, Neb.) with a hard base hit up the middle of the infield and into the outfield.
Penn College scored two runs in the first inning, five in the second, four in the fourth and one in the fifth. Jordan Spect led the Wildcats by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and one double. Olivia Hemstock followed with two hits (one double), two runs and two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Kaci Ketchum (Austin, Texas) took the loss in the circle as she pitched three innings.
Penn College starting pitcher Mackenzie Weaver (3-2) and Taylor Cashner combined on the one-hitter as Weaver struck out four Bison.
Game 2: Penn College 20, Gallaudet 2 (F/5)
Penn College continued to pour it on Gallaudet in the second game as the Wildcats scored 11 runs to begin the game in the top of the first inning. The visitors added three more runs in the second inning, two in the third and four in the fifth as the Wildcats continued to steal on the Bison up 14 runs. This was the second straight day the Bison surrendered 20+ runs in a game.
Gallaudet scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning when Ketchum doubled to center field to start the inning. Freshman Caitlyn Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) followed with a double to left field to put runners on second and third base. Freshman Emily Nover (District Heights, Md.) grounded out to the pitcher but it allowed Ketchum to dart home to get GU on the scoreboard down 14-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Smith took Penn College starting pitcher Kyla Benner (5-2) deep with a solo home run over the left field fence as GU trailed 16-2.
Sophomore Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) took the loss in the circle as she pitched two innings.

Gallaudet will begin the month of April where it left off March, at home, as the Bison welcome SUNY Morrisville (0-5, 0-4 United East) to the GU Softball Complex on Friday, April 1, at 3 p.m. for a United East doubleheader.
