WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team scored a season-high 84 points here Tuesday in its home opener in the Field House but it wasn't enough to take down Bryn Athyn College, one of the top scoring teams in NCAA Division III right now, as the visiting Lions roared to a 95-84 victory before a crowd of 227.
Gallaudet (1-5) was on fire from long-range most of the night as the Bison netted a season-best 15 3-pointers. This is the first time since the 2018-19 season that a Bison team finished a game with 15 3-pointers. It was last accomplished at SUNY Morrisville when GU made 15 of 31 on January 26, 2019 in a 92-86 loss to the Mustangs.
The Bison and Lions (3-0) combined for 29 3-pointers as both teams shot 43 percent from long-range the entire game. GU made 10 of 21 3-point attempts in the first half as junior guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) made half of them while sophomore guard Jake Schwall (Fishers, ind..) poured in three in the opening 20 minutes.
GU clung to a 49-48 lead at intermission but the Lions came out and scored the first seven points in the second half to regain the lead and never looked back. The Bison pulled to within three, 69-66, at the 7:54 after Lewis made his sixth of seven 3-pointers. Bryn Athyn answered every call Gallaudet made in the second half with its own equalizer to keep the Bison at arm's length from the lead.
Lewis scored a season-high 21 points as all made field goals came from 3-pointers. Senior guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) set a new season-high mark with 18 points as he added four rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. Sophomore forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) scored eight of his 13 points in the second half to go with eight boards and two blocks. Sophomore guard Malosi Viena (Waipahu, Hawaii) recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one assist. Senior guard Preston Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) did all of the dishing from the top of the key and finished with a career-high 13 assists.
Bryn Athyn was paced by forward Jaryn McCann's 22-point, 11-rebound game while guard Jamal Cannady Jr. added 21 points and guard Isaiah Cureton tallied 19 points.
