Top United East Conference team gets past Gallaudet to begin New Year

WASHINGTON - A depleted Gallaudet University men's basketball team ran into a buzz saw here Saturday afternoon against Penn State Harrisburg, the top team in the United East Conference and defending champions. The visiting Lions put on a passing clinic as they assisted on 21 consecutive made field goals to begin the game and shot 51.5 percent from the field en route to an 87-53 victory in the Field House. 

Gallaudet (1-9, 1-2 United East) was only able to suit up nine players as the rest of the team and its head coach were not present due to COVID protocols.

Penn State Harrisburg (10-1, 3-0 United East) scored the game's first 13 points and led 20-1 before GU scored its first field goal at the 13:24 mark. The Lions took a 52-20 lead into halftime as they made a season-high 10 3-pointers in the first half. Penn State Harrisburg assisted on 20 consecutive baskets and continued the streak a minute into the second half before the streak snapped with an unassisted basket. 

The Bison played the Lions tough in the second half and were only outscored by two points, 35-33. The Lions went deep to their bench and played nine reserves and had 14 players log minutes in the game. Penn State Harrisburg received 26 points from the bench.

Gallaudet was led by sophomore guard Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.), who scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half. He led all-scorers with six made 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and passed out two assists. Freshman forward Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) was the other Bison in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Lance Wood (Fishers, Ind.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with four points and three steals. Freshman guard Jake Schwall (Fishers, Ind.) ripped down seven boards and passed out a team-high six assists and netted four points in the loss.

Penn State Harrisburg senior Donyae Baylor-Carroll, a preseason D3hoops.com All-American second team guard, scored 19 points as he made 5 of 8 shots from 3-point range and passed out nine assists in 23 minutes played. Senior forward Dylan Daniels posted a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high four blocks. Senior forward Brandon Coleman added 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and one block while senior guard Zegary Scott III was the fourth Lion to post double digits with 11 points, seven assists and six boards. The Lions finished the game with 29 assists on 34 made field goals.
