GU clipped by Seahawks in physical conference tilt

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team dropped a 84-53 United East Conference game to St. Mary's College of Maryland here Tuesday evening in an empty Field House as the no spectator policy continues this week.

Gallaudet (1-14, 1-7 United East) came out of the gates on fire and ran out to an early lead over St. Mary's College of Maryland (7-5, 6-0 United East). The Bison lead 8-2, six minutes into the contest, before the Seahawks stormed back to take the lead and set the tone for the remainder of game.

St. Mary's used a 19-2 run to take a 21-10 lead with 7:39 left before halftime. The visitors took a 33-19 advantage into the break.

In the second half, the physical contest went up a notch as tempers flared midway through. The Seahawks broke open the game with an 18-3 run that increased a 45-26 lead to 63-29 in a three-minute window.

Freshman guard Enow Otto Jr. (Waldorf, Md.) led the Bison with 10 points off the bench to go with seven rebounds. Freshmen Shannon Cotto (Lakewood, Ohio.) and Brandon Chung (Kahului, Hawaii) added nine points each. Cotto made a team-high four steals and three assists while Chung was one of three Bison with seven boards. Sophomore forward Lance Wood (Fishers, Ind.) added five points and seven rebounds while team leading-scorer Rory Lewis (Frederick, Md.) was held to six points. 

The Seahawks were led by junior guard Daryn Alexander who stacked up 18 points, three assists and two rebounds. Freshman guard Duane Mason Jr. tallied 14 points, four assists and four steals in the win.
