Box Score WASHINGTON - On a warm and humid evening at Hotckiss Field, tempers flared between Gallaudet University and nearby neighbor Washington Adventist University in a non-division game. When the dust settled the visiting Shock took home a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Bison.
Washington Adventist (2-1), a member of the NAIA division, scored a quick goal in the second minute of the game off a set piece. Mario Zelaya took a corner kick from the right side of the field and lifted a ball to the center of the Bison goal area. The ball found the forehead of Francisco Villanueva, who headed home the goal past Gallaudet junior goalie Shane Angel (Mechanicsville, Md.).
The Shock held the 1-0 advantage until the 24th minute when Gallaudet sophomore midfielder Jonathon Waterman (Fruita, Colo.) went on the attack and sent a hard cross from the left side of the field towards the middle of the Shock goal area. A Washington Adventist defender slide back towards the goal to try and deflect the pass out of the box but ended up knocking the ball into the goal for an own goal. The error tied the game at 1-1 where it stood through halftime and into the second half.
Gallaudet's best chance to take the lead came in the 65th minute when senior forward Raymond Mukhailov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a 1-on-1 fast break with Washington Adventist goalie Shawn McGuire (four saves), who came through with a big save to thwart the Bison opportunity.
The game got chippy in the final 16 minutes of play as six of the game's eight yellow cards were issued and seven of the combined 17 second-half fouls were called. The two teams combined to commit 27 fouls in the 90-minute contest.
Washington Adventist scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute when Alexander Villantoro got past some Bison defenders and was left 1-on-1 with Angel (nine saves) and scored with a low shot.
