WASHINGTON – Freshman Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) continued to impress here Friday evening as he broke a decade-old school record as Gallaudet University hosted Marymount (Va.) University in a non-conference meet in the Field House pool. The Saints (2-0) won the meet 119-63 over the Bison (0-2).
Martinez won the 100-yard breaststroke event as he touched the wall in one minute, 5.83 seconds. His time broke the old mark of 1:06.09 set by Michael Hubbs in 2006. This is Martinez's third school record in two meets this season.
Martinez finished second in the 200 freestyle, just 19 tenths of a second off the first-place time set by Marymount, with a time of 1:59.80. Martinez took third in the 200 individual medley as he finished in 2:14.47.
Freshman Nickolas Roman (Lubbock, Texas) finished second in the 50 freestyle as he touched the wall in 24.39 seconds, just over a second behind Marymount's James Gibbons (23.09). Roman was fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.84) just two seconds off the first-place pace (52.60).
