Box Score READING, Pa. - In a highly competitive North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) men's soccer showdown here Saturday Penn St.-Berks edged Gallaudet University, 4-3, thanks to a late goal.
Gallaudet (3-9-1, 2-6-1 NEAC) netted back-to-back goals in the 70th and 75th minute to knot the game at 3-3. A Bison free kick deflected off a Nittany Lion defender and bounced into the goal to cut the Penn St.-Berks' lead to one, 3-2. Junior forward Sean Huber (Orange, Calif.) headed home the game-tying goal off an assist from junior midfielder Angel Ortiz (New York, N.Y.) minutes later.
Freshman forward Roel Gutierrez (Austin, Texas) tried to give GU the lead in the 77th minute with a shot but it was saved by Penn St.-Berks goalie Gerardo Sosa (two saves).
Penn St.-Berks (6-6, 6-2 NEAC) went on the attack and had three corner kicks in a row before Cole Mays (one goal, one assist) assisted Tom Ulrich on the game-winning goal at the 86:19 mark. The shot got past GU freshman goalie Noah Means-Simonsen (Louisville, Ky.), who concluded the game with eight saves.
It was Ortiz who got Gallaudet on the scoreboard at the 10:52 mark in the first half when he booted home a penalty kick goal past Sosa.
Mays scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Dan Zhmurkin in the 17th minute to tie the game at one.
Gallaudet's defense surrendered a goal right before halftime when T.J. Yurkovic stole the ball from a Bison defender and scored at 42:42 to send the host Nittany Lions into halftime up 2-1.
