WASHINGTON – It was a marathon day of softball at the Gallaudet University Softball Complex on Sunday as the host Bison played three games against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Penn St.-Abington.

The Bison (4-17, 1-3 NEAC) celebrated their first conference win of the season with a 13-5 victory in five innings in the second of three games. Penn St.-Abington (5-2-1, 3-1 NEAC) won the first game, 14-4 in five innings, to complete the second game from Saturday's doubleheader that was suspended after one inning due to freezing temperatures. The Nittany Lions won the third and final game of the day with a 16-0 shutout in five innings.

GU scored runs in every inning during its eight-run victory as the Bison set a new season-high with 13 runs. Third baseman Emily Forsberg (Riverside, Calif.) and shortstop Genesis Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) led the way with two hits while leadoff hitter Kate Fetzer (Noblesville, Ind.) scored four times. The Bison scored five runs in the third and took an 11-0 lead into the top of the fifth before the Nittany Lions scored five times off starting pitcher Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.).

Gallaudet responded with two runs in the bottom half to end the game by the mercy rule. Senior Mia Fernandez (Artesia, N.M.) doubled home pinch-hitter Amanda Camacho (San Jose, Calif.), who reached on catcher's interference, to start the bottom of the fifth. Pinch-runner Olivia Stein (Tucson, Ariz.), inserted for Fernandez, stole third before scoring the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Barlow (3-8) cruised for the first four innings as she only allowed four hits before the five-run fifth where the Nittany Lions hit three of their seven hits for extra bases.

In the third game of the day, Penn St.-Abington starting pitcher Michaela Drogalis (2-1) threw a perfect game during the five-inning game. Gallaudet only had two balls leave the infield as no Bison reached base as Drogalis retired them in order for 15 outs. Fetzer (0-3) took the loss in the circle as she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits, four walks and five strikeouts.

The first game of the day saw the teams start in the second inning with Gallaudet batting as the away team. Penn St.-Abington had built an 8-0 lead after one inning played on Saturday. The Bison cut the lead in half with four runs in the second inning as Drogalis had control issues early, walking three batters and hitting one, combined with a wild pitch and a passed ball. GU scored four times without the ball leaving the infield. Penn St.-Abington responded with six runs scored in the next three innings to end the game in five.

The Bison are off for a week before they travel to Wilson College for two conference games on Wednesday, April 8, at 3 p.m.
