Box Score WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University's first men's soccer season since 2012 came to a close here Sunday afternoon as the Bison were shutout, 2-0, against SUNY Polytechnic Institute in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game at Hotchkiss Field.
Gallaudet finishes the season with a 2-13-2 overall record and 1-11 mark in conference play. SUNY Poly (9-5-2, 6-3-1 NEAC) is still in the running for a NEAC tournament berth as it has two more conference games this week.
SUNY Poly midfielder Austin Rooney got the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the 13th minute with a nice pass from the right side by Emil Winzell to Rooney, who was on the doorstep and shot the ball into the lower left corner. The Wildcats led 1-0 at halftime.
The two teams had some opportunities in the second half but both defenses hunkered down and played the majority of the game in the midfield. The Wildcats capitalized on a scoring chance late in the half when C.J. Dean headed a ball backwards towards Bazo Coulibaly, who was open near the left post, and shot it past Gallaudet goalie Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.) at the 81:35 mark. Setzer finished the game with nine saves.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to today's match Coach Pedro Braz, his coaching staff and team paid tribute to three seniors. Setzer and defender Zachary Seguin (Royal Oak, Mich.), both team co-captains, and midfielder Gabriel Carino (Bronx, N.Y.) were joined by family and friends and honored for their dedication to the men's soccer program. Setzer and Carino played for Gallaudet during the 2011 and 2012 seasons while Seguin played in 2012 before the program ceased before being brought back this past year.
Setzer started 45 games in net for the Bison and recorded seven wins, logged 3,952:57 minutes, made 360 saves and posted five shutouts. Seguin started 31 of 32 games in two seasons and took 10 shots (three on goal) as he anchored GU's defense. Carino started 47 of 49 games and tallied one goal and one assist on 26 shots (nine shots on goal) in three seasons.
