Box Score 2 ABINGTON, Pa. – Any hope Gallaudet University had left to earn a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) softball playoff spot was erased Thursday as the Bison lost both conference games to Penn St.-Abington. The Bison dropped the first game, 6-4, and fell, 10-2, in six innings in the second game at Huntingdon Field.
Gallaudet (13-23, 5-13 NEAC), who is 1-9 in away games this season, has lost six straight road games in the past two weeks. The Bison are in fifth place in the NEAC South Division. The top three teams in the division advance to the NEAC tournament in May.
Penn St.-Abington (16-6, 12-2 NEAC), second in the NEAC South Division, trailed 1-0 in both games but quickly bounced back to sweep the conference doubleheader.
In the first game, sophomores Chelsea Lee (South Brunswick, N.J.) and Anna Lynch (Falls Church, Va.) had two hits apiece. Lynch had a RBI single in the third and RBI triple in the fifth. Senior pitcher Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) took the loss in the circle as she allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out two.
In the second game, Gallaudet scored two runs on three hits. Lee scored both runs for the Bison while juniors Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and Mia Fernandez (Artesia, N.M.) recorded RBI singles. Fellow junior Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the loss as she allowed five runs (three earned) on one hit, three walks and struck out three.
Penn St.-Abington catcher Shelia O'Hagan had two home runs in the second game win to pace the Nittany Lion offense.
GU will end its season on the road Saturday, April 26, at Wilson College (11-11, 8-8 NEAC) for a NEAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
