Bison defeat Goucher at home, 75-71

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team came out victorious Saturday afternoon as they defeated non-conference rival Goucher College, 75-71, at the Field House.

Gallaudet (5-2) wasted no time taking the lead against Goucher (1-8) with a quick three-point shot from Rashad Gatlin (Chicago, Ill.) and were able to keep a close, consistent lead against the Gophers in the first half. Junior Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) made back-to-back three-pointers with eight minutes left before halftime, where the Bison led 36-32.

Gallaudet entered the second half leading the Gophers by only four points and played a strong offensive game, scoring 10 points in just over four minutes of play. Goucher picked up its defense as the half went on but were unable to hold the Bison down. Fouls from the Gophers gave the Bison a 12-point lead with only 1:52 left to play, but a couple free throws and two unanswered three-point shots from the Gophers leading scorer Kevin Miles (33 points) resulted in a close 73-71 lead for the Bison with only two seconds left on the clock. The Bison held off the Gophers as guard Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) put the Bison up 75-71 with two free throws.

Gordon was able to break through the Gopher defense and recorded a double-double with an impressive 28 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Senior Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) added to the Bison score with 13 points and six rebounds while Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) added 13 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) added six points, eight rebounds and three steals while Nelson totaled 10 points on the day. The Bison forced 15 turnovers which they were able to turn into 15 points, scored 28 points in the post, and the Bison bench was responsible for 34 of the team's 75 points.

The Bison are off until after the new year when they travel to Penn St.-Abington in North Eastern Athletic Conference action on January 6 at 3 p.m.
