Anna Polivanchuk wins three events as GU comes up short in Frostburg State sweep

WASHINGTON – Senior Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) won three individual events on Saturday but it wasn't enough as the Gallaudet women's swimming team lost to Frostburg State University, 171-91, in a non-conference meet at the Field House pool. GU men's swimming team lost 208-51 to the Bobcats.

Polivanchuk won three of the four events the Bison took a first-place finish in. She started her day with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay where she teamed with senior Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.), sophomores Paige-Cecily Ramos (New York, N.Y.) and Thyra Wood (Great Falls, Mont.) as they finished in 2:08.10, five seconds off the first place time posted by the Bobcats. Polivanchuk won the 100 butterfly (1:05.50), 100 backstroke (1:01.05) and 100 individual medley (1:04.17).

Wood had Gallaudet's other first place finish as she won the 50 backstroke as she touched the wall in 33.84 seconds. Wood was also second in the 50 butterfly (31.78) and third in the 100 IM (1:15.54). Giles was second in the 50 freestyle (29.17), 100 breaststroke (1:23.53) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (1:07.28). Brianna Stroud-Williams (Tucker, Ga.) finished second in the 500 freestyle (6:55.17) and third in the 50 backstroke (37.83) behind Wood.

Gallaudet received some third place finishes from Paige Foreman (Albuquerque, N.M.) in the 1,000 freestyle (14:44.28), Taylor Mickelson (Fargo, N.D.) in the 200 free (3:08.71), Morgane Vincent (Chátenay-Malabry, France) in the 50 breaststroke (45.22). The Bison 400 freestyle relay team of Stroud-Williams, Vincent, Alexandra Camell (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Foreman finished third in 5:09.00.

On the men's side, Frostburg swept all 14 events and took first, second and third place in three different events. There were no men's or women's diving events today.

Gallaudet took second in the 200 medley relay as the team of Seth Washington (Frederick, Md.), Xuan Lin (Fulton, Ill.), Abdiel Davila-Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) and Bernardo Toledo (Río Piedras, Puerto Rico) finished with a time of 2:09.75. Toledo finished second in the 100 free (1:05.03) and was third in the 200 free (2:39.77). Davila-Cruz was second in the 100 backstroke (1:14.12) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:05.08), six seconds off the first place time, and third in the 100 IM (1:04.78). Washington was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.48) and the 50 backstroke (35.99) . Lin was fourth in the 50 butterfly (38.38) and 50 breaststroke (39.11). Freshman Nathan Parkin (Elgin, Ill.) was third in the 50 free (29.31), five seconds off first place, and fourth in the 100 free (1:11.45), over six seconds behind Toledo.

The Bison will wrap up a three-meet homestand in two weeks on Friday, Oct. 31, when they welcome conference foe Cazenovia College to campus for a 6 p.m. meet.
