Box Score WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University won the first women's basketball meeting against Bryn Athyn College on Tuesday evening with a 58-54 win in the Field House.
Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) led the way with 20 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two steals. Fellow senior Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) reached double figures for the fifth straight game as she poured in 15, made 3-of-10 shots from 3-point range. Latham grabbed five rebounds and made four steals.
GU (6-4) took a 26-24 lead into halftime, the seventh time this season the Bison led at intermission. The Bison have won six of their past seven games.
The Bison pulled away from the Lions in the second half with a 12-0 run that took three minutes. Bryn Athyn took its only lead, 34-33, in the second half on a Hajaaha Stevens (12 points, 17 rebounds) layup at the 14:22 mark. Minutes later the Bison went on their run as Latham netted eight of the 12 points. Gallaudet led 45-34 with 9:51 left in regulation.
Gallaudet scored 17 points in the second half off 18 turnovers by Bryn Athyn. The Lions held a 24-18 edge in the paint and outrebounded the Bison, 57-42.
Bryn Athyn (4-4) crept back into the game down the stretch as it chipped away at a 53-42 lead with six minutes left. The Lions pulled to within three, on two separate occasions, and eventually trailed by two, 56-54, with 36 seconds left. Stergio made two key free throws in the waning seconds to ice the game.
Junior guard Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) led the team with nine rebounds while senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) passed out a game-high eight assists.
Kristine Clark led the Lions' attack with 15 points and six rebounds while Stevens and Brittany Vick (eight rebounds) added 12 points each.
Bryn Athyn is a future North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) member as the Lions will officially join the conference in the 2014-15 academic year. The Lions entered tonight 3-0 against NEAC teams this season.
GU will next travel to Randolph-Macon College (9-2) on Thursday, Jan. 9, for a non-conference 7 p.m. game.
