WASHINGTON – A special Gallaudet
University Athletics Hall of Fame class will be enshrined during
the University's 150th anniversary celebration this summer on
Friday, July 11. The GU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2014
includes Laurie Anderson Achin, Sarah
Burton Doleac, Kris Gould, Dyan
Kovacs, Wayne Langbein, Ronda Jo
Miller and Gregory Warren. A luncheon
will be held in their honor on Friday from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in the
Kellogg Conference Hotel on the campus of Gallaudet University.
The Gallaudet University Hall of Fame Induction is one of the
premier events of the year for the GU Athletic Department. The
special event recognizes the men and women, past and present, whose
contributions to Gallaudet University Athletics have been deemed
worthy of induction into the GU Hall of Fame.
A brief description of this year's inductees:
Laurie Anderson Achin, '03 (Women's
Volleyball) was a three-year letterwinner for the
Gallaudet women's volleyball program where she helped the
Bison capture the 1999 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC)
championship and a NCAA tournament appearance. She was a three-time
all-conference honoree, twice on the second team (1999, 2000) and
once on the first team (2001). She was named the 2001 CAC Player of
the Year as the Bison posted a 17-16 record and lost in the
conference tournament semifinals. That same season she earned
American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-region honors.
The Schaumburg, Ill., native was picked as the 2001-02 Gallaudet
Female Athlete of the Year, was a two-time team most valuable
player and was a team captain.
Sarah Burton Doleac, '82 (Softball Coach)
was Gallaudet's softball head coach for 26 years where she
guided the program to 224 NCAA victories in over 600 games played.
In 1993, the Bison posted an impressive 16-4 record as Doleac
earned Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Coach of the Year honors.
In 20 seasons in the CAC, Doleac coached 23 all-conference players.
Doleac is a proud graduate of Gallaudet (Class of 1982) where she
played four years on the Bison field hockey and softball teams as
well as one year on the basketball and tennis teams. She graduated
with Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Alpha Pi honors and was named to the
Dean's List six times.
Kris Gould, '87 (Athlete, Honorary
Contributor) has been a part of Gallaudet University
athletics for over 30 years. He was a standout student-athlete from
1982-85 where he played three seasons of men's soccer (1983,
'84, '85), three seasons of baseball (1983, '84,
'85) and two years of men's basketball (1982-84). He
still holds the school record for batting average in a season with
.441 set in 1983 and graduated with the program's career
record for batting average with .395. He joined the GU athletics
department in 1991-92 and has held many different positions
including head coach, assistant coach, athletic trainer, game
management, equipment manager to his current post of Facility and
Equipment Coordinator. Gould is a jack-of-all-trades, has been the
man behind the scenes doing tireless work, and a mainstay of GU
athletics for three decades.
Dyan Kovacs, '98 (Women's
Volleyball) was the ace up head coach Peg
Worthington's sleeve as the middle hitter was a prolific
threat for the Bison women's volleyball team, especially when
serving. The four-year letterwinner still holds the CAC career mark
for service aces per game/set (0.82 per set). She was named the
1995 CAC Player of the Year, earned two All-CAC first team
selections (1994, '95) and two American Volleyball Coaches
Association all-region accolades (1994, '95). Her single
season service aces totals rank second (111 service aces in 1995)
and fourth (104, '94) in CAC history along with her aces per
game/set totals of 0.96 (1994) and 0.90 (1995) that rank third and
fourth, respectively, in conference history. Kovacs has other CAC
single season marks for total blocks (244, '93, ranks fourth
overall), kills per game (5.02, '95, fifth) and kills (617,
'95, ninth). Kovacs was a member of two CAC championship
teams (1992, '95).
Wayne Langbein, '96 (Men's Track and
Field) was a highly decorated thrower for Gallaudet
University's men's track and field program. He was a
three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) first team honoree
in discus, hammer and shot put. He finished first in those events
at the 1991, '92 and '93 CAC men's outdoor track
and field championships. Langbein was the first back-to-back CAC
Men's Track and Field Player of the Year (1992, '93), a
feat that has only happen three times (twice by Bison
student-athletes) in the 23-year history of the conference.
Langbein was a standout in the classroom as he was named the CAC
Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, twice, in 1992, '93. He was
Gallaudet's second-ever CoSIDA Academic All-America when he
was named to the second team in 1993. Langbein participated in the
1993 NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships where
he earned All-American honors in discus. He competed at four
straight Mason-Dixon championships where he won the discus and
hammer events in 1992, '93. He was named the 1993 Mason-Dixon
Championships Outstanding Male Athlete. He still holds the school
record in the hammer throw when he made a toss of 51.47 meters
(168', 10”) at the 1993 CAC championships. He helped
the Bison finish third in the team standings at the 1993 CAC
championships.
Ronda Jo Miller, '01 (Women's
Volleyball) was inducted into the GU Athletics Hall of
Fame in 2008 for women's basketball but was not nominated for
her women's volleyball accomplishments. She was a three-time
Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Year (1996,
'97, '99) in women's volleyball and a three-time
American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-region honoree
(1996, '97, '99). She became the first women's
volleyball player to earn CAC Player and Rookie of the Year in the
same season (1996) and a four-time All-CAC first team selection.
Miller helped the Bison win their third and fourth CAC
championships (1996, '99) and make two NCAA tournament
appearance. Her four single-season kill totals rank first (1,038 in
1999), second (896, '97), third (845, '98) and fifth
(720, '96) in CAC history and are in the Top 10 in Division
III history. She finished her career with a NCAA record 3,579 kills
(tops in Division I, II, III) on 7,117 attacks (.389 hitting
percentage) in 583 sets played.
Gregory Warren, '82 (Men's Cross
Country) is one of Gallaudet's top harriers in
program history. His top four 8K times are still the best in GU
men's cross country team history. He ran an 8K under 25
minutes twice in 1978, those times (24:49 and 24:54) are tops in
program history. Warren made three appearances at the NCAA Division
III cross country championships (1977, '78, '79). On
Nov. 18, 1978, he finished 35th out of 200 runners at the NCAA
championships with a time of 24:54. He just missed the All-American
cut (Top 25 runners) but his performance is still the best a Bison
runner has posted at a NCAA cross country championship.
Two years ago, the GU Athletics Department inducted
Kathryn A. Baldridge, Brian A.
Bippus, Stephanie L. Danner,
Michael C. Kent, Barry M.
Strassler, William T. Sugiyama and
Albert A. Walla.
To be considered for the GU Athletic Hall of Fame one must be a
former Bison student-athlete, coach and/or contributor that is five
years removed from the University. One must be nominated in writing
and submitted to the Gallaudet University Alumni Association.
Inductees can be deaf, hard of hearing or hearing. The GU Athletic
