GU softball falls to Calvin, Washington and Jefferson in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Gallaudet University softball team lost to Calvin College, 15-1, and to Washington & Jefferson College, 11-0, in two five-inning games here Monday at Hancock Park.

Gallaudet (8-4), was the home team for the first game, against Calvin College. The Bison got behind early as the Knights scored four runs in the first inning and tacked on eight more in the second. Gallaudet's only run came in the third inning when senior center fielder Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) hit a RBI double and Elena Ciccarelli scored.

Sophomore pitcher Montana Murphy suffered her first loss of the season as she allowed 15 runs (11 earned) off 12 hits in four innings of work. The Bison only had two hits, other than Johnson's hit in the third, Ciccarelli had a single in the first inning.

Calvin (3-0) second baseman Merin Cok went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs with a double, and a home run, she was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Designated player Lydia Gildea went 3-for-4 for Calvin with three runs scored and four RBIs with a double. Pitcher Lina Avila (1-0) pitched five innings giving up just one run and two hits with three strikeouts.

Gallaudet, was the away team for the second game, against Washington & Jefferson (5-5). Johnson switched out her center fielder glove, for a pitchers mit and gave up 11 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits and five walks in four innings. The Bison's lone hit came from Zamica Gage (Austin, Texas) on a single in the third inning.

Washington & Jefferson shortstop Kelsey Cunningham went 3-for-3 with three runs score and three RBIs with a walk and a double. Starting pitcher Madison Roto (1-0) pitched three innings allowing one hit and one walk. Bethany Sheperd came in to pitch the final two innings for the Presidents not allowing a hit or a run.

The Bison continue their Spring Break trip with a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 20, against Mt. Mercy College at 3 p.m. and Carleton College at 7 p.m. at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
