Gallaudet wins two at Endicott Invitational

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team stepped out of region to take on some stiff competition at the Endicott Invitational this weekend in Massachusetts and came away with a split. The Bison won two of their four matches on Friday and Saturday at Endicott College.

Gallaudet went toe-to-toe with UMass.-Boston, who entered the 2012 season ranked No. 16 in the nation after going 28-5 last year, but lost in five sets, 3-2. The Bison won the second and third sets before UMass.-Boston won the fourth and fifth sets to complete the come-from-behind victory 18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15.

Sophomore Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) led the Bison with 20 kills on 54 attempts and 13 digs while senior Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) made 14 kills and 15 digs for the double-double. Sophomore setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) passed out 47 assists, made 10 digs and two service aces. Freshman Kate Fetzer (Noblesville, Ind.) had a match-high 31 digs. Senior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) tallied 10 kills and three blocks.

After a break the Bison took back to the court to face Plymouth State and won in four sets, 25-23, 25-27, 25-18, 26-24. Whited had 15 kills and Frowick added 12 while Tubert passed out 38 assists and Fetzer made 19 digs in the win.

On Friday, Gallaudet lost its first match of the season when Bowdoin College handed the Bison a 3-1 loss, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-25. Frowick paced the Bison with 10 kills on 36 attempts and added a team-high 16 digs and four service aces. Israel had nine kills, Tubert passed out 28 assists and Whited and Fetzer both had 13 kills.

The Bison recovered with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) against Susquehanna in the nightcap. Frowick had a team-high 13 kills as Israel (eight kills) and Tubert (28 assists) both made one block solo and two block assists.

Gallaudet returns home to host Goucher College in the first home match for the Bison this season Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. Prior to the start of the match the Bison will be recognized for their AVCA Team Academic Award.
