Bison softball completes NEAC regular-season with a road split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ABINGTON, Pa. – There was a two-hour delay before Saturday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) softball doubleheader between Gallaudet University and Penn St.-Abington got underway. Once the first game started the Bison came out on fire as the visitors batted around in the first inning and scored six runs. GU (10-22, 7-13 NEAC South) went on to capture that game 10-1 in five innings. In the second game, Abington (5-25, 5-13) trailed 4-0 heading into the fifth inning where the Nittany Lions scored six runs and added four in the sixth en route to a 10-8 upset win.

The win for the Bison is the 10th of the season as Gallaudet softball reached double digits in wins for the first time since 2006 when it posted a 12-19 mark. This is the first time since 2003 that both Gallaudet's baseball and softball teams had 10 plus win totals in the same season.

Gallaudet is currently in fourth place in the NEAC South Division standings with a 7-13 conference mark. GU completed its conference regular-season schedule today. Abington is in fifth place with a 5-13 record but will play last place College of St. Elizabeth, who is winless, on Monday, April 25, for two games. If Abington sweeps St. Elizabeth it will be tied for fourth with Gallaudet. The top four teams from each division advance to next weekend's conference tournament. If Gallaudet and Abington are tied the conference office will use different tiebreakers to determine who should continue its season. GU and Abington split the season series 2-2.

In the first game, the Bison received two two-run doubles from the bottom of its line-up as freshman Serina Arellano (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Michelin Barron (Frederick, Md.) hit back-to-back doubles. The No. 8 and 9 batters, respectively, also reached base with singles in the fifth and scored moments later on a two-run double by sophomore second baseman Nicole O'Malley (Fredericksburg, Va.). GU also scored two runs in the fourth inning where sophomore Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) got things going with a double.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) picked up her fifth win of the season as she pitched the complete game where she allowed one Nittany Lion run off two hits. Abington got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a RBI double by Shelia O'Hagan. Sweigart issued four walks, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch and struck out two. O'Hagan suffered the loss in the circle for Abington.

The second game found Gallaudet picking up where it left off as the Bison scored early while Sweigart and O'Hagan squared off in the circle for their respective teams for a second straight game.

GU pushed across two runs in the first, one in the third and one in the fourth as the Bison led 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Abington exploded for six runs, aided by a three-run home run by Cassandra LaPenna, and added four more in the sixth.

Gallaudet trailed 10-5 going into the seventh where the Buff and Blue scored three runs and had a potential fourth run on third base with two outs but the last batter for the Bison popped up to second base to end the game. Gallaudet had 15 hits and left nine runners on base in the loss.

Barron had a stellar game at the plate as she fell one win shy of the cycle as she had two singles, a double and triple as she scored three runs and picked up one RBI from her 4-for-4 game.

Sweigart (5-5) allowed 10 runs (nine earned) off 13 hits while she walked four and struck out two batters while O'Hagan gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 15 hits as she walked four batters.

Gallaudet will complete its regular-season schedule on Tuesday, April 26, with a non-conference home doubleheader against McDaniel College.

Note: GU coach Joseph Kolcun announced Saturday that Thursday's doubleheader on the road against Washington Adventist has been canceled and will not be made up.
