Bison run into tough Penn St.-Harrisburg squad, drop two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – It was tough going for the Gallaudet University softball team on the road Sunday against Penn St.-Harrisburg as the Bison got swept by the Nittany Lions 9-1 in six innings and 7-3 in seven. This is the second time in just over a week that the Bison dropped a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader to the Nittany Lions (15-11, 12-2 NEAC South).

Gallaudet (4-18, 1-9) can draw some positives from today's doubleheader as the Buff and Blue scored four runs off the Nittany Lions, who are battling for first-place in the NEAC South Division. A week ago, Penn St.-Harrisburg swept the Bison 9-0, 8-0 in Washington, D.C.

The Bison took a brief lead in the second game as they scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 advantage into the bottom half of the inning. That lead didn't hold up in the bottom half where the Nittany Lions scored five runs and never looked back. Penn St.-Harrisburg took advantage of Bison walks, wild pitches, passed balls and an error to regain the lead.

Sophomore pitcher Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) took the loss as she went the distance for the Bison. She allowed seven runs (four earned) on just two hits, walked 10 and threw three wild pitches. Johnson did strikeout two batters.

Kara Boyd earned the win as she threw a complete game and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, walked two and struck out eight Bison.

In the first game, junior Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.) drove in Gallaudet's lone run with a RBI double in the second inning. Harrisburg scored four runs in the first inning to set the tone.

The road doesn't get easier for the Bison this week as they hit the road to face first-place Wilson College on Wednesday, April 13, for two games.
