Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a back and forth North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) men's basketball game between Gallaudet University and Penn St.-Berks on Wednesday night it all came down to the final seconds. Unfortunately for the Bison it was the Nittany Lions who made the final basket to win 70-69 before a crowd of 310 at the Field House.
Gallaudet (13-8, 9-5 NEAC) held a three-point lead, 69-66, with a minute and a half left in regulation but that was erased by two baskets made by Penn St.-Berks (8-13, 8-7) including the game-winner by Thomas Smith (14 points) with 17 seconds left on the clock. The Bison couldn't connect on a 3-point shot and a final desperation shot in the waning seconds while the Lions missed their final three free-throw attempts.
The game featured seven ties and six lead changes. The teams were even shooting the ball as the Nittany Lions made 29-of-59 (49.2 percent) and the Bison made 27-of-55 (49.1 percent) from the field.
The Bison were led offensively by junior guard Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) as he netted 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half. Senior guard Luther Weedon (Walkersville, Md.) came off the bench to hit six 3-pointers and finish with 18 points. Junior forward Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) finished with nine points, six rebounds and six assists in the loss.
Penn St.-Berks had four players in double figures led by Dontez Reid's 15 points, as he made four 3-pointers. Shawn Green and Dontale King both chipped in 10 points in the win.
The Nittany Lions led 34-29 at the half and used a 7-0 run early in the second half to stake themselves to a 41-32 lead with 16:49 left in regulation. GU outscored Penn St.-Berks 40-36 in the second half.
The Bison will next host Penn St.-Harrisburg on Saturday, February 12, at 3 p.m.
