Box Score 4 FROSTBURG, Md. – The Gallaudet University
volleyball team had a tough weekend at the Frostburg State
University Invitational as the Bison posted a 1-3 record during the
two-day tournament.
Sophomore outside hitter Ann Whited
(Fishers, Ind.) was named to the all-tournament team as she led the
team with 63 kills, seven service aces and was third on the team
with 58 digs in the four matches. Her best game came against Geneva
where she knocked home 18 kills and added 19 digs.
The Bison dropped their first two matches of the tournament on
Friday to Geneva 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25) and Susquehanna
3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 20-25) in the nightcap. GU bounced back on
Saturday with a 3-1 win over Marietta as the Bison won the first
two sets and held on in the fourth to take it 31-29, 25-17, 24-26,
25-23. The final match of the weekend was against North Carolina
Wesleyan as the two teams went down to the wire in the only
five-set match of the invitational. GU won the first set 25-20 but
dropped a tough second set 18-25. The Battling Bishops won two of
the next three sets to take the match 25-20, 18-25, 7-25, 25-23,
10-15.
Sophomores Mari
Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) and Jessica
Israel (Frederick, Md.) finished the invitational with
46 kills apiece. Klassen added 63 digs and five service aces.
Israel made a team-high four blocks. Junior libero Micaela
Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) had to switch over to setter
halfway through the invitational. She finished the tournament with
84 assists, 77 digs and three service aces.
Gallaudet is off until Friday, September 17, when the Bison will
travel to Salisbury, Md., to participate in the SU Invitational.
GU's first game is against Baldwin-Wallace at 5 p.m. followed by a
game against Eastern University at 7 p.m.
