Box Score 2 BUENA VISTA, Va. – The 2010 softball
season came to a close for Gallaudet University on the road
Wednesday as the Bison dropped a non-conference doubleheader to
Southern Virginia University 13-0 in five innings and 11-6 in seven
innings.
Gallaudet finished the year 3-23 under the direction of Interim
Head Coach Kitty Bottoms in her first season at
the helm after serving four years as an assistant coach to former
Bison coach Sarah Doleac.
The Bison only had three hits in the shutout loss against the
Knights (21-7), a member of the USCAA. Junior Alicia
Balzer (Montgomery Village, Md.) took the loss as she
allowed 13 runs on 16 hits and two walks. SVU scored nine runs in
the first and four in the third inning.
In the second game, Gallaudet tied the game at 5-5 in the top of
the fifth inning as the Bison scored five runs. Four of the five
runs scored thanks to a three-run home run by junior Casey
McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.). The Bison outfielder had
two hits in the second game and one in the first game. Freshmen
Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) and Nicole
O'Malley (Fredericksburg, Va.) each had two hits in
the second game. O'Malley also scored twice.
SVU responded with six runs in the bottom half of the fifth
inning. GU added a sixth and final run in the top of the seventh.
Freshman pitcher Alicia Johnson (San Jose,
Calif.) took the loss as she surrendered 11 runs on six hits,
walked 10 batters, threw four wild pitches, hit two batters and
struck out four Knights. Kyla Christmas earned her 17th win of the
season as she threw the complete game.
GU began its season back on March 9 against Southern Virginia at
home. The Knights swept that twinbill 8-0 and 19-5 in five innings.
