Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. –
The Gallaudet University softball team dropped a non-conference
doubleheader against Wilson College on Tuesday at the GU Softball
Field. The Bison committed a combined 10 errors, six in the first
game, as Wilson shut out Gallaudet 7-0 and 13-0.
Gallaudet
(0-4) hung tough with Wilson (5-1) in the first game as the Bison
only trailed 3-0 heading into the fifth inning. GU surrendered two
runs in the fifth and the sixth against an aggressive base running
team. Wilson, a future conference opponent for Gallaudet when the
Bison join the North Eastern Athletic Conference, stole seven bases
in the first game.
GU had a
base hit in the first, second, fourth and seventh innings. Right
fielder Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.) led
the way with two hits. The Bison left seven runners on base as
Gallaudet had runners on second base four different times. Junior
pitcher Alicia Balzer (Montgomery Village, Md.)
suffered the loss as she allowed seven runs (three earned) on nine
hits as she walked three and struck out three batters.
The two
teams crammed in the second game due to fading daylight. Wilson
served as the home team because the doubleheader was originally
slated to be held on Wilson's campus but was moved due to
poor field conditions.
Wilson
scored 11 runs on two hits in the first inning as Gallaudet's
pitching couldn't find the strike zone. The Bison walked six
batters, hit two plus two fielding errors prolonged the first
frame. Sophomore Kaitlyn Freitas (New Bedford,
Mass.) made her season debut in the circle for the Buff and Blue.
She didn't make it through the line-up as she was pulled
after her fifth walk to the eighth batter. Freshman Alicia
Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) came in from the outfield to
pitch the rest of the game. Wilson added two more runs in the
fourth inning as the Phoenix tried to move the game along.
GU
mustered two hits in the second game against Wilson starting
pitcher Nicole Musser (3-1). Leigh Roche (2-0) won the first game
for Wilson as she struck out 12 Bison in seven innings. Brianna
Smith led the offense as she scored five runs in the sweep.
Gallaudet
will begin its Capital Athletic Conference schedule tomorrow
against University of Mary Washington in a doubleheader that will
begin at 3 p.m.
