Box Score COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men's soccer 62-game winless streak is now over as the Bison won 1-0 on the road over SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game on Saturday. The victory is the first for Gallaudet since a 1-0 win over Southern Virginia University back on October 21, 2006.
Junior forward Justin DiBiase (Fishers, Ind.) scored an unassisted goal in the 65th minute to give Gallaudet its first lead since a 1-0 lead over Southern Virginia back on September 11. DiBiase's shot came from 10 yards out and went inside the left post past Cobleskill goalie Mack Curran (two saves).
The Bison (1-8, 1-3 NEAC) defense had to buckle down over the final 25 minutes of play to secure the win. Cobleskill outshot Gallaudet 12-2 in the second half.
"It is nice to end the streak," said Gallaudet coach Luis Gendive. "Our defense held strong in the second half. The midfielders provided huge support as we hung on to survive."
Gendive, now in his third season with the Bison men's soccer program but the first since the 2006 season, was the last GU coach to experience a men's soccer win. Gallaudet closed out the 2006 season with three losses before going 0-60 until today. The 63-game winless streak was one of the longest current streaks in the NCAA before today. The conference win is the first for the Bison since a Capital Athletic Conference win back in 1997 a span of 98 games (including CAC postseason games). This is Gallaudet's first season in the NEAC.
Cobleskill (2-6-1, 0-3-1 NEAC) controlled the game early on as the Fighting Tigers took 14 first half shots. Gallaudet only got off two shots in the first 45 minutes of play as the teams went into the half tied at 0-0.
Junior goalie Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana) made nine saves in the game, six in the decisive second half, to earn his first collegiate victory in net for the Bison.
DiBiase and senior defender Sean Ryant (Cleveland, Ohio) both had two shots apiece in the win for the Bison.
GU will aim for two wins a row on Sunday, October 3, with a NEAC road game against SUNYIT at 2 p.m.
